Easter and the Meaning of the Divine Intervention

By Chip Ingram

For Christians, Easter of course means infinitely more than a ham dinner and jellybeans. But are you really clear on what the real meaning of Easter is?

Jesus Christ’s life on earth was a divine intervention. God knew humans couldn’t rescue themselves from their addiction to sin—so He intervened, motivated by love.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believe in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

How can we be certain that Jesus was capable of intervening and saving us? The Bible reveals three things that affirm this to be true.

First, Jesus was capable of saving us because of His life on earth. He lived a sinless life, in which He revealed the character of God. He claimed, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). He said “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

Second, Jesus was capable of saving us because of His death. Colossians 2 makes it clear that when He died, He didn’t just physically die, because He was fully God and fully man. Being man, He could die; being God the Son, His death was a perfect sacrifice to bear the penalty of sin.

And third, Jesus was capable of saving us because of His resurrection. He conquered death and defeated the power of the evil one.

Jesus knew He came to die and be resurrected. Listen to what He told His friend Martha. “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26).

Do you believe this? This Easter, I invite you to think carefully and deeply about who Jesus Christ is, what His intervention in human history was for, and what we commemorate on this most significant of all Christian holidays.

You and every individual who ever lived or will ever live on earth have two options, in response to Jesus’s divine intervention. Option A is to remain in denial and convince yourself that life is just fine, and you have nothing to be concerned about. Option B is to recognize your deep need for the hope and peace and salvation offered by Jesus Christ.

Jesus “came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). Let Him find you, today.
