Supernatural Community: We belong to one another, so why don't we act like it? 2000x600 jpg

We Belong to One Another–Why Don’t We Act Like It?

By Chip Ingram

We are supposed to be united in supernatural community. Why are there so many hurting people who are not getting the love and support they need, and on the other hand, there are many others who are willing to give love—but don’t?

You’ve no doubt noticed it: The Body of Christ is full of people with needs, and at the same time, with people who have love and gifts to share.

But somehow there’s a big gap, a broken connection. The needs aren’t always noticed. The help doesn’t always flow. What is the missing link?

Here’s my conclusion: The link between huge need and willing hearts is the crucial understanding that we are “members of one another” (Romans 12:5).

In other words, we belong to each other. Those of us who are members together of the Body of Christ are members of a supernatural community.

Not only that, as members of a community created by God Himself, we have a supernatural agenda. This agenda, or mission, is bigger than any individual, and all members are called to it according to their gifts. We’re all given tasks according to how God has created us, and together we form His Body on earth. (Just that thought alone is pretty awesome, isn’t it?)

The supernatural community, with its supernatural agenda, has also been given supernatural power.

As believers, we have the Holy Spirit living inside of us. Romans 8:11 says: “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you.”

This means the power that raised Jesus from the dead also empowers us. It helps us to overcome sin’s power in our life, to love people we don’t like, and to reach out when we’re tired and don’t feel like it. We also have the power to trust Him through difficult times and the power to endure when we feel like giving up.

Thus, there is power in being part of a group with the same agenda and the same power. But we need to recognize it. And when we don’t, there’s a missing link.

So if you’re a believer in Jesus Christ, then know that you are a member of a supernatural community, with a supernatural origin, with a supernatural agenda, and you possess supernatural power!

If you get that from your head to your heart, you’ll never think about Christians the same way ever again! And you’ll never do life in community the same way again.

And together, we can repair that missing link!
